watercolors of grief and love

My beloved cat Lenny died on March 10th at 18 years old. Lenny was a very special, exceptionally sweet and affectionate cat. Caring for him was a joy and privilege. I am grateful to have had so many years with him and I will miss him everyday.

A few weeks after his death I went to my studio and made a lot of watercolors, sometimes while sobbing, to try and find a way to process this huge absence and to honor his gentle, sweet, and brave soul. Below are some of these watercolors. I put off scanning them for months. Then I put off looking at the scans. Then I put off writing this. I didn’t want to have to title this newsletter anything but I had to so I decided to use the title of the Madonna song I broke down crying to while thinking of Lenny while on the Long Island Railroad this spring.
